STAND UP, TAKE ACTION challenge aims to mobilize millions more this year Print E-mail
Friday, 28 August 2009
The STAND UP and TAKE ACTION challenge calling for action against poverty and for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will be held on October 16 to 18, 2009. Last year, more than 116 million people around the world, 73.1 million from Asia alone, participated in the event by standing up and pledging their solidarity with the world’s poorest people. The campaign was widely covered globally by major media networks and is still the largest single, coordinated movement of people in the history of the Guinness World Records.

This year, the Millennium Campaign will join force once again with GCAP and a wide range of partners worldwide to mobilize millions more people to “STAND UP and TAKE ACTION” and to set a new world record. The challenge will take place over 72 hours between October 15 midnight to October 18 midnight.
As a key initiative of the United Nations, the Millennium Campaign supports citizens' efforts to hold their governments accountable for the achievement of the MDGs, which was formally adopted by 189 countries in 2000. The MDGs are a set of eight goals to eradicate extreme poverty, ensure primary education, promote gender equality, improve the health of mothers and children, combat HIV/AIDS, protect the environment, and create a global partnership for development. 2009 already passed the midpoint to the 2015 deadline to achieve the MDGs, it is more urgent than ever that we unite in our efforts to raise awareness of the Goals and remind policy makers of their promises to achieve them. The STAND UP and TAKE ACTION challenge provides an opportunity to reinvigorate the momentum to ensure that poverty reduction and the MDGs remain a priority on the national and global political agenda,” said Minar Pimple, Director of the UN Millennium Campaign Asia Regional Office.
